The twentieth century saw significant global movements of communities which have had important effects on teaching and learning in schools and universities. In the U.K. over one in ten pupils are learning English as an additional language (EAL) and their future achievement in the education system will be critically determined by their success in learning English. English as an additional language is situated within mainstream education but it is also a distinct area of education. Supporting all student teachers to respond to bilingual pupils' learning needs is therefore a key task for all new initial teacher educators.
This site has been developed by NALDIC, the UK professional association for EAL with help from the TDA to provide support and guidance on English as an Additional Language for all professionals involved in initial teacher education.
