UK Research Centres and Databases

Research and projects in different UK universities related to aspects of bilingualism, multilingualism, EAL and community languages are diverse. Some are more orientated towards adult learners, learning English as a Foreign Language or aspects of language use by proficient bilinguals.

University of Birmingham bilingualism database

The University of Birmingham Bilingualism Database is an alphabetical and by subject bibliography of articles relevant to teaching and learning with EAL in both UK and international contexts, with links to other national and international sites on bilingual education.

Second Language Acquisition Topics, Essex University

The Essex University database on the study of linguistics is created by Vivian Cook, founder of the European Second Language Association.

King's College London Working Papers, Urban Language and Literacies

This group publishes research focusessed on language and literacies in socially stratified and ethnically plural urban settings.

The Evidence for Policy and Practice Information and Co-ordinating Centre (EPPI-Centre) is part of the Social Science Research Unit (SSRU), Institute of Education, University of London.The EPPI-Centre was established in 1993 to address the need for a systematic approach to the organisation and review of evidence-based work on social interventions. The Research Evidence in Education Library (REEL) is the home site of the Centre for Evidence-Informed Policy and Practice in Education, commissioned by the Department for Education and Skills, England. The studies commissioned are designed to meet the DfES’ key strategy of “developing a better, well founded evidence base for future policy development and practice “.

Bilingualism research group, Lancaster University

The Lancaster group was founded in 1984 and has evolved into an inclusive collection of researchers from many different institutions working in many different areas of bilingualism and multilingualism.

The LTSN is a network of 24 subject centres based in higher education institutions throughout the UK.
