NALDIC held  its 10th Annual Conference in London on November 23rd 2002. The theme of the conference was  EAL in the UK context: Looking forward, Looking outward. The keynote speaker was Dr Chris Davison from the University of Hong Kong who spoke about Partnership in teaching English as an additional language: Looking forward, looking outward. The conference also featured concurrent sessions from 

  • Professor Mike Breen Implications of differences in mainstream and EAL teachers' principles for teaching EAL students
  • Professor Viv Edwards  Bilingual Education 
  • Professor Eve Gregory Teaching for Real: Siblings as mediators of literacy in bilingual families
  • Professor  Brian Street New Literacy Studies, Development Literacies and the National Literacy Strategy: bridging the gaps - a contribution to EAL perspectivesion: politics and pedagogy

The conference also featured afternoon seminars led by

  • Moira Brazil,   Including refugee pupils in: EAL circle time in schools
  • Jonathan Brentnall, Progress in the Principality!
  • Lynne Cameron, Analysing the grammar of writing
  • Angela Creese, The Way Teachers talk
  • Charlotte Franson, The EAL Professional in 2002
  • Constant Leung,    Assessment in EAL: old problems, new challenges
  • Geri Smyth, Where DO they get their ideas from?
  • Manny Vazquez, Reconsidering key principles in EAL teaching

The conference also included the launch of a new NALDIC book language and Additional/Second Language Issues for School Education. A reader for teachers edited by Constant Leung. A full conference report is currently being collated and details of afternoon sessions can be found here
