English, Language and Literacy 3 to 19
There is an alternative to the 'official' National Curriculum for English!
Our friends in the UKLA have just published the first six of an exciting new series of ten booklets under the umbrella title English, Language and Literacy 3 to 19: Principles and Proposals. Based on a long history of seminal studies and classroom developments, the series aims to set out a 'desirable, intellectually sound and practically achievable consensus around which those who teach English or teeach in English could unite'. The authors don't just challenge some aspects of the new National Curriculum for English and its assessment (a valuable contribution in its own right) but go on to propose meaningful and effective alternatives.
The first six booklets, published on June 1 are:
- English, Language and Literacy 3 to 19: Summary: John Richmond, Peter DOugill and Mike Raleigh
- Talk: John Richmond
- Reading 3 to 7: John Richmond
- Writing 3 to 7: John Richmond
- Grammar and Knowledge about Language: John Richmond
- Drama: John Richmond
Four further booklets will be published on September 1:
- Reading 7 to 16: Peter Traves
- Writing 7 to 16: John Richmond
- Media: Andrew Burn
- English 16-19: Angela Goddard
Price per booklet £12 (£11 to UKLA members)
