Report shows impact of EALness and racism on Eastern European learners

The 'New migration new challenges: Eastern European migrant pupils in English schools' report shows that the EAL attainment gap is not as narrow as the DfE would like to suggest and there remains an urgent need to focus on the distinctiveness of EAL.

The findings of this report by Dr. Antonina Tereshchenko and Prof. Louise Archer of King's College London provide further evidence that the apparent closure of the attainment gap between EAL and non-EAL pupils at GCSE hides some very significant differences between particular groups that demonstrate the need to recognise and make appropriate provision for the distinctive needs of EAL learners. The report also highlights the corrosive impact of racism towards migrant families and the effects this can have on attainment.
