The British Council requires an editor for a volume in its new series Innovations in English Language Teaching and Learning. The topic will be Innovations in English Language Teaching to Migrants and Refugees. The series will eventually comprise 8-10 volumes, each treating a different area of innovation. The deadline for applications to edit this volume is 24th February 2012
The Innovations in English Language Teaching to Migrants and Refugees volume will follow the pattern envisaged for all future volumes in the series, as follows:
It is expected to contain 10 - 12 papers, written by different writers, each looking at a different aspect of the topic. At least 4 papers should have a focus on EAL; 4 with a focus on ESOL and 2-4 papers on bringing EAL and ESOL together. Each paper will be of 4000- 5000 words in length. Papers will be authoritative but not “academic”, practical rather than theoretical, concisely expressed, and refer to particular cases. They will be characterised by their clear and succinct style. Each volume will be available online and in print form.

- 14-16 year olds attending FE colleges
- methodology and policy change on bringing greater coherence and closer co-operation between EAL and ESOL
The Volume Editor’s tasks:
- To agree, with the British Council, the possible areas of focus of the papers in the book, and to suggest possible writers (though the opportunities for writers will be widely advertised by the British Council).
- To ensure that the volume contains a balanced coverage of the topic, drawing from a range of cases and contexts; that each of the papers addresses the topic from a distinctive angle; and that unnecessary overlap or repetition across the papers is avoided.
- To ensure that the volume is of high quality, that all papers respond to the overall theme of the volume in describing / illustrating innovation.
- To brief each writer on the project and what is required, and agree the main themes with them and the structure of their paper.
- To manage and support each writer: liaise with them; give feedback on drafts and make suggestions; ensure final papers are well structured and written and of general high quality; ensure deadlines are met.
NB Matters to do with contracts, design, printing, distribution etc will not be the responsibility of the Volume Editor.
The Volume Editor will report to, and be supported by, a British Council officer.
Minimum qualifications and experience:
1.Wide-ranging experience of teaching and learning, and assessment
2.Knowledge of the area of EAL, or ESOL, or both is essential.
3.A relevant qualification at Masters level is highly desirable.
Length of assignment:
The Editor will be expected to start on the assignment as soon as possible. The duration of the assignment is subject to discussion.
