NALDIC has recently published two new resources for teachers. The first is web based and updates and revises our guidance on the education of children from refugee and asylum seeking backgrounds. In 2003, the Refugee Council estimated that there were almost 99,000 refugee children of compulsory school age in UK schools. How to help these children get the most from their education and their new lives remains a pressing concern for teachers. Our second publication tackles the tricky question of examinations, assessment and the bilingual learner. How we assess EAL learners within the national system remains a concern for teachers in schools across the UK. Edited by Dianne Excell, this volume of our flagship NALDIC Quarterly includes articles on both summative assessment, which identifies the level pupils have reached in a standardised scale of attainment and formative assessment which finds out what pupils can do so that their teachers know how to help them progress further.
