Teaching English is up to parents
NALDIC is very concerned at statements made this week (02.02.11) by David Cameron during prime ministers questions. Kris Hopkins, Conservative MP for Keighley and Ilkley claimed that in his constituency too many children start school without knowing how to speak English. He asked the Prime Minister whether he agreed that there was a responsibility and an obligation on parents to 'make sure their children speak English'.
David Cameron not only agreed with this point but went on to say that he intended to put in place 'tougher rules' to make sure that husbands and wives joining their families, particularly from the Indian sub-continent, 'do learn English'.
NALDIC is very concerned that it should be argued that it is the responsibility of parents, rather than schools, to teach children the skills and knowledge they require for their future lives.
