Critical Pedagogy

Critical Pedagogy is very relevant to EAL. Critical approaches allow us to look at how language is used in texts to communicate specific meanings. For example, 'Who benefits, Who is disadvantaged by the position on offer, Who does it include, Whose voice is missing' (Janks, 2013).

Hillary Janks' new book 'Doing Critical Literacy' is one resource that outlines how to implement such an approach within linguistically and culturally diverse classroom contexts.
