Ofsted launches EAL 'good practice' case studies

Ofsted has developed a good practice website for schools at at www.goodpractice.ofsted.gov.uk. The first EAL case study has been published following a visit to Feltham Community College. Inspectors visiting the school found students learning EAL making outstanding progress through a combination of good teaching, rigorous assessment and monitoring procedures, and a tailored curriculum.

The second EAL case study and first primary school, Cheetham Church of England Community School in Manchester, was published on 17th May 2011. The focus of this case study is provision for new arrivals. Inspectors report that the school provides a welcoming environment for parents and children who are new to the UK so that they settle well. Pupils make rapid progress in learning English as an additional language through opportunities for speaking, including in their home language, and a well trained school community.
