EAL book shortlisted for UKLA Academic Book Award

A book for those teaching EAL learners in the primary phase has been shortlisted for the prestigious UKLA Book Awards. Teaching Bilingual and EAL learners in Primary Schools by Jean Conteh is published by SAGE and reconsiders which children should come under the umbrella of EAL and provides practical strategies for teaching them in an inclusive classroom. It asks 'what do we mean by EAL?' and covers theories of learning and approaches to teaching.

Teaching Bilingual and EAL learners in Primary Schools is nominated in the UKLA Academic Book Award category which represents the best of academic books about the teaching of English published in the UK over the last two yearsThe Book Awards are given for the text that:

  • inspires the teaching of literacy
  • will be a lasting and rich resource for teachers, teacher educators and students
  • is accessibly written
  • makes a distinctive contribution to literacy education
  • is based on sound literacy research
  • encourages teachers to be reflective, innovative and creative
  • is relevant to classroom practice

The UKLA Book Awards are the only national awards chosen by teachers, this year from Liverpool, Leicester and Manchester. The winner will be announced at the forthcoming UKLA national conference 5-7 July 2013.
