The Dfe has recently published the pupil characteristics data from the January 2013 school census. This shows that numbers of BME and EAL pupils continue to rise nationally in both Primary and Secondary schools.

Colleagues are urged to look at the data for their area to see if it reflects their own knowledge of changing demographics. Some minority ethnic populations such as the Eastern European Roma continue to be under - recorded.
First Language
In state-funded primary schools 18.1 per cent of pupils of compulsory school age or above had a first language that was known, or believed, to be other than English, an increase from 17.5 per cent in 2012.
In state-funded secondary schools 13.6 per cent of pupils of compulsory school age or above had a first language that was known, or believed, to be other than English, an increase from 12.9 per cent in 2012.
Ethnicity
In state-funded primary schools 28.5 per cent of pupils were classified as being of minority ethnic origin, an increase from 27.6 per cent in 2012.
In state-funded secondary schools 24.2 per cent of pupils were classified as being of minority ethnic origin, an increase from 23.2 per cent in 2012.
