    How much does it cost to support EAL learners?

    In a recent development, NALDIC has produced a briefing paper which introduces a NALDIC estimate of the additional costs of supporting the language education of EAL and bilingual learners.The briefing paper also summarises estimates which have previously been made concerning the costs of supporting the education of EAL and bilingual learners.

    The briefing paper outlines recommendations for EAL language teaching time depending on the age and stage of EAL development of the bilingual learner. This EAL language teaching should be provided as daily sessions of equal teaching time, ideally in groups or sets but could include 1-1 sessions if suitable groupings were not available.

    As EAL learners are not a homogenous group, the illustrative costings developed vary from £8640 in relation to an isolated Year 10 beginner in English to £240 for an advanced bilingual learner in Year 2 of a multi-ethnic primary school.
